John D. Cater, President & Principal
Investigator
John Cater received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from the
University of Colorado in 1984, a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology
from the University of Colorado in 1989, and is currently a Ph.D.
candidate (abd) with the University of Leicester, U.K., and was recently
added to the Registry of Professional Archaeologists. He has over 20
years experience in archaeology. Mr. Cater has conducted over 600
surveys, has been involved with over 25 excavations, and written over
200 reports. He has worked, and is qualified to work in Colorado, New
Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, Minnesota,
Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa. As Principal Investigator he is involved
in all stages of project completion including-scheduling, personnel
hiring and supervision, surveying, testing, report preparation, and
laboratory analysis. He also arranges contracts with sub-contractors,
writes for contract proposals and on-call contracts with major oil and
gas companies.
David Skoglund, Vice-President & Principal Investigator David Skoglund obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geology and
Anthropology from Adams State College in 1978. He has over 21 years of
experience in southwestern archaeology. Mr. Skoglund has worked for
several Cultural Resource Companies as well as the National Pack Service
at Mesa Verde National Park. Mr. Skoglund has conducted over 500
surveys, has been involved with numerous excavations, and written over
200 reports. While working at Mesa Verde Mr. Skoglund worked with the
Burned Area Emergency Rehabilitation (BAER) Post Fire Assessment Team
during the Chapin #5 Fire Rehabilitation Project. He also worked for the
Save Americas Treasures Program conducting architectural documentation
on several large alcove sites at Mesa Verde National Park and several
sites at Hovenweep National Monument. He has worked, and is qualified to
work in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. As Principal
Investigator he is involved in all stages of project completion
including scheduling, personnel hiring and supervision, surveying,
testing, report preparation, writing contract proposals and laboratory
analysis.
Cindy J. Bunker, Staff Archaeologist Cindy Bunker has over 20 years of experience in field archaeology in
northern New Mexico. Cindy’s experience varies widely with regard to
survey, archaeological excavation, and report writing. She has completed
over 500 archaeological survey and excavation projects and authored over
200 reports. Cindy’s research interests include all aspects of
prehistoric and historic occupation of the northern Southwest.
Pamela Combes, Staff Archaeologist/Editor
Pamela Combes received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from
the University of New Mexico and has a strong background in field
archaeology, laboratory studies, and editing. Her diverse background
includes archaeological survey in New Mexico, laboratory work for large
scale projects including data entry, client contact and editing.
Currently, Pamela coordinates field work, is in contact with clients,
continues to complete archaeological survey, authors reports, and serves
as the company editor.
Jean M. Conlan, Staff Archaeologist/GIS Analyst Jean Conlan received her Bachelor of Arts degree at Metropolitan State
College followed by postgraduate work at Northern Arizona University.
Jean has over 15 years of experience in museum studies and field
archaeology in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. She has a
strong interest in GIS application. While at Northern Arizona
University, her research interest was development of a predictive model
using GIS to determine prehistoric settlement patterns. She also
assisted in editing and updating the Kaibab National Forest’s heritage
site stewardship database using Arc/Info and LTPLUS. Jean is currently
working as a field archaeologist for select projects, authoring reports,
and is a GIS Analyst for Aztec GIS Services.
Vern Hensler, Staff Archaeologist/Associate Principal Investigator Vern Hensler joined the AAC team in 2004. Vern completed his Bachelor of
Arts degree in Anthropology at Fort Lewis College and has over 25 years
experience in Southwestern archaeology, including archaeological survey
and excavation. He has worked in many areas of the Southwest, including
Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. Recently he worked on the Animas La
Plata Project, a major excavation in southwestern Colorado. His many
research interests include Anasazi architecture, ceramic analysis, and
modes of prehistoric site abandonment.
Mickie Murin Staff Archaeologist/Director of Tours Mickie Murin has been working as an archaeologist for 10 years. She has
been a Registered Professional Archaeologist for six years. Upon
receiving her Master of Arts degree in Anthropology, she worked for
Horizon Environmental Services, Austin, Texas, as Cultural Resources
Director/Principal Investigator. Arriving in New Mexico two years ago,
she spent a year as Education Coordinator for Salmon Ruins Museum in
Bloomfield. Her teaching experience includes working with school
children in grades K-12 and teaching at San Juan College as a part-time
adjunct faculty member. Mickie currently conducts tours for the company
to places such as Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde, and Aztec Ruins.
Trisha M. Rude, Staff Archaeologist/Macrobotanical Specialist Trisha Rude received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Prescott College
and received her Master of Science degree in Quaternary and Climate
Studies from the University of Maine. She has been associated with the
prestigious Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine in Orono,
Mesa Verde National Park, Homolovi Ruins State Park, Crow Canyon
Archaeological Center, and several archaeological compliance companies.
Trisha also has over eight years of archaeological fieldwork experience.
Currently, Trisha not only serves as a field archaeologist and report
author, but heads the Macrobotanical Laboratory.
Scott L. Underwood, Staff Archaeologist, Managing GIS Analyst Scott Underwood completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University
of Nebraska and completed GIS certification with the University of
Montana in 2005. He has over seven years of experience in archaeology
throughout the Midwest and Southwest as well as over 16 years experience
in the mainframe computer industry. Scott’s research interests include
spatial analysis of prehistoric settlement patterns, prehistoric
viewshed analysis, and prehistoric site abandonment modes as they relate
to landscape archaeology. Scott currently manages the rapidly growing
GIS Services Department. He oversees all aspects of the department and
also analyzes GIS data for specific projects.
