What do archaeologists do? Despite many beliefs to the
contrary, archaeologists DON’T DO Dinosaurs! Archaeology is the
study of ancient, often extinct cultures around the world. Modern
archaeology can be broken into two distinct categories: Academic
Research and Cultural Resource Management. Academic research is
usually tied to universities and long-term studies of specific
archaeological sites, areas, or regions. Cultural Resource
Management is mandated by law in the United States and is oriented
toward preservation of archaeological sites that are threatened by
modern development on state of federal lands.

What kind of education do
I need? In general, to be an archaeologist, the more
education you have the better. At a minimum this will be a Bachelor
of Arts degree. Many states in the USA require a Master of Arts
degree before someone can run projects. Of course, the more
experience you have the better as well. At a minimum experience in
an accredited archaeological field school is necessary.

Can I dig stuff
up, or collect artifacts? Leave artifacts and sites
undisturbed! By collecting artifacts from sites you are erasing part
of the archaeological record. It is actually illegal to collect
artifacts or excavate sites on Federal or State lands and can lead
to fines and jail!

What
happens to artifacts after you dig them up? Artifacts
that are collected by archaeologists are carefully documented
regarding where they are found (our notes allow us to put the
artifact back exactly where it was found). The artifacts are usually
transported to a lab for cleaning and study. Once this is completed,
the artifacts are remanded to a museum where they are kept for
additional study in the future.

Why is archaeology important? Archaeology is important
for many reasons. First, it allows all of us to understand our
history, and the lifeways of ancient cultures. By understanding
ancient people, we know where we came from and maybe can predict the
future a little. The old saying is that those who don’t know history
are doomed to repeat it.

If I find
something, who should I call? If you find a site or an
artifact you should call your local Bureau of Land Management
Office, or the State Historic Preservation Office in your state.
These offices are listed under the Government pages of your phone
book. Remember, leave the artifact where you found it!
